About the Zaki Gordon Institute: Sedona’s Film School
The New Generation of Filmmakers
The Zaki Gordon Institute for Independent Filmmaking (ZGI) is dedicated to mentoring the new generation of filmmakers. Whether you are experienced or new to the craft, take advantage of the latest technology and learn from the best—within a film industry model.
The film school is located in beautiful Sedona, a small city in Northern Arizona, just south of Flagstaff and two hours north of Phoenix. Sedona’s inspiring red rocks make it one of the most photographed destinations in the world and home to numerous artists.
Hands-on Educaton
The program offers greater hands-on experience, in less time, at a lower cost than other film schools. Close mentoring helps students learn more about who they are as a filmmaker. All students enrolled in the full-time program at ZGI direct his or her own short film!
Co-founded by acclaimed screenwriter Dan Gordon, ZGI first opened its doors in 2000. Fully accredited as part of Yavapai College and a member of CILECT, the association of the world’s major film and television schools, ZGI has earned a reputation for delivering quality education at a very reasonable price. Gordon strongly believes that keeping the tuition affordable gives students more mobility after graduation.
If you are interested, apply as soon as possible. Applicants are required to be 18 years old or older, have the equivalency of a high school diploma and a true desire to make a movie. Student loans and financial aid are available, for those that qualify. If you are ready to take on responsibility, put in the hours and work with others, then you are ready to apply!
Zaki Gordon
The Institute is named for acclaimed screenwriter Dan Gordon’s oldest son, who died at the age of 22. Zaki Gordon was a brilliant filmmaker who made his film independently, despite studio interest in his screenplay. He was uncompromising in his art. Fortunately, his passion for and commitment to storytelling and filmmaking continues to live on through the Institute.
Affordable Tuition
The Digital Filmmaking Certificate, a full-time program, including; workshops, master classes and production fees, is a little over $10,000 for the full year for out-of-state tuition. For an Arizona resident, the cost is roughly $4,000 for the full year. Residents of states that participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) may enroll at reduced tuition rates (approx. $5,000, check with the Financial Aid Office for current rates). Current states participating are: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Thesis Short Film:
The school supplies gear for students to make a short film in the second semester. Additional production expenses vary greatly depending on the individual project.
