A REAL Film School Right in Your Backyard!

If you want to study Filmmaking you can go to UCLA, USC or NYU and pay, on average, $40,000 a year. And you know what you’ll be after your first year? A sophomore.

How many films will you have made? Zero.

Best Hands-on Program in the Country

Yet one of the very best hands-on filmmaking programs in the country is right here in Northern Arizona. At the Zaki Gordon Institute for Independent Filmmaking (ZGI) you will be working on your first film within the first three weeks of the first semester. You will make eight collaborative short films and write and direct your own twenty minute thesis film in the first year of study! That is more than you will do at most of the Big Name schools in FOUR years! And your (in-state) tuition will be about ONE-TENTH the cost at any of the Big Name schools. Saving money will make you happy.

Transferable Credits

You will also be pleased that your credits are transferable, and in fact you can earn your BA at Northern Arizona University (NAU) with a minor in Filmmaking through the Zaki Gordon Institute.

What Do the Experts Say?

Get a taste of life at Film School! Put yourself in the director's chairDid you ever see the movie “Juno” or “Up In The Air” or “Thank You For Smoking?” Those were all produced by Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning producer, Dan Dubiecki. Dan was a special studies registered student in the very first class at ZGI. In addition, he has been a frequent guest lecturer in our “Guerrilla Filmmaking” workshop. Here’s what he has to say, “The Zaki Gordon Institute shares an intensity in its hands-on approach to storytelling through motion pictures, matched only by the top film schools in the country. I’m thrilled to be a supporter of such a wonderful school!”

Have you heard of “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” or “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” from Academy Award winning sound editor, the late, Frank Warner? He was a mentor and advisor in setting up the state of the art post production sound facility at the Zaki Gordon Institute. Here’s what he said, “This isn’t a film school. It’s a film MAKER’S school!”

You Will Make Movies

At ZGI you will take what you learn in theory and IMMEDIATELY put it into practice making short films each week, eight of them in your first semester! Then in your second semester the entire school is in production mode. This is when you will write and direct your twenty-minute thesis film. You won’t spend two years in a classroom dreaming about equipment. You will learn by picking up your gear to MAKE movies.

Award Winning Lecturers

You will learn from instructors and guest lecturers who are some of the leading figures in the motion picture industry. Click here for the most up-to-date list.

The Technology You Need

You will work with state-of-the-art digital equipment including a computer lab with forty Mac computers, all of them equipped with the Final Cut Pro suite of applications. If you have EVER thought about studying filmmaking, you owe it to yourself to attend our Weekend Film School Getaway. Follow your passion…and you’ll be happier!
